Over the years, since Val Poore first moved onto a barge in Rotterdam, she has been both physically and mentally immersed in living her dream on the Dutch, Belgian and French waterways. Although she has written several books about her experiences, there are always more stories to tell.
This book is a collection of articles about the boats, the way of life and the numerous incidents, from funny to frustrating and even frightening, that have filled her world since 2001. Most of the chapters originally appeared in SisterShip, a women’s sailing magazine published in Australia.
It is a novella-length book and can be read in any order, one story at a time; alternatively, it can be a quick read from beginning to end. Boatyard Views is intended as an addition to Val’s other books for those who’ve read them or as an introduction to her boating life for those who haven’t.
“I love her books. She describes everything so beautifully it feels like you are on the boat with her. I’ve read them all and enjoyed them all!”
About How to Breed Sheep etc.:
“From the very first line, the author grabbed me with her nonchalant wit. Her self-deprecating humor and keen observations about life among English eccentrics (both human and animal) had me chuckling throughout.”
About Vereeniging Fares South:
“A fascinating insight into an unusual and unique way of life, giving the reader a truly privileged glimpse (without all the hassle and hard work!) of the beauty and adventure of travelling by barge.
About African Ways:
“The sights, sounds and smells of Africa come alive and you feel yourself drawn in to Valerie life there.”
